Chapter2

TWO
Maui -- Susan's House

JUST ANOTHER DAY in paradise on Maui. Susan grabbed the mail and shut the door. Gas bill, bank statement, junk mail, more junk mail …
     Hello? … What's this?
No return address, but no label either -- and a very pretty stamp.
Dear Mrs. Thomas. "I was sorry to hear about your recent fender bender. I'm just glad you weren't seriously injured!
Fender bender? This must be some kind of come-on to get me to change insurance companies or something, Susan thought.
Even if you're covered, it's such an inconvenience. And it never feels like the same car ever again. It's especially hard to take when you didn't do anything to deserve it.
This last sentence was in italics and bold-faced.
The only possible good that can come from something like this is that it could help make you more empathetic to others who have experienced similar injustices.
Maybe it's from a church or charity begging for money, she mused.
Yours for correcting injustices when and where we can.
     Dave Ruskjer
I suppose a certain percentage of people have fender benders right before they get a letter like this -- but it seems like such a long shot, Susan thought to herself.
Oh well, she sighed as she set the letter aside.
